Leo Powell Breeding Insights on Clodovil

29 Jul 2017

“Clodovil has been a stalwart at Rathasker Stud since he retired to stud in 2004. A classic winning son of Danehill (Danzig) he beat Catcher In The Rye to win the French Guineas, fulfilling the promise he had shown as a two-year-old when he won both of his starts, one of them over four and a half furlongs! His three wins in his second season also included the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau over a mile and he ran fifth in both the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes and the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. He is the best of half a dozen winners for his Linamix (Mendez) dam Clodora and she won the Group 2 Prix de l’Opera at three. Clodovil’s 11th crop are two-year-olds of 2017 and they include Bengali Boys who provided trainer Richard Fahey with yet another victory in the richly endowed Weatherbys Super Sprint on Saturday. The Nick Hartery-bred colt was some bargain when he was sold by the Castlebridge Consignment for only €11,000 to Aiden O’Ryan and Fahey at Goffs last September in Part 2 of the Sportsman’s Sale. He collected more than €140,000 already with two successes and two runner-up finishes in his four starts. A tilt at blacktype must be on the cards now.

Maurice Burns’s belief in Clodovil who has had on average of fewer than 60 foals in each of his crops to date, is exemplified by the fact that he stands both of his best racing sons. Group 2 winner Gregorian is at the National Stud in Newmarket (2017 fee £4,500), while Es Que Love is alongside his sire at Rathasker where he covered at €5,000 this year. Both these sires have their first yearlings for sale this autumn. Clodovil’s two Group 1 winners are Moriarty and Nahoodh. A feature of the many good horses sired by the grey is that they are very sound, durable performers. Nahoodh ‘only’ ran a dozen times, while Moriarty, who has won more than €1.25 million, raced 66 times. Es Que Love went to post 51 times. These are just a couple of examples of progeny that have raced on and on.

Just before Bengali Boys sold last year, his older full-brother Diablo D’Or won easily over the minimum trip at Chepstow. The pair are the third and fourth offspring of their dam Caherassdotcom, named after the Hartery’s Caherass Stud. A daughter of Compton Place (Indian Ridge), Caherassdotcom was trained for Hartery by Michael Halford and she was somewhat frustrating, managing to place on six of her 10 starts but failing to get her head in front. She is the dam of a third winner, Win Lose Draw (Dark Angel), who has also been successful last year. They are the only runners to date for their dam.”
