Opal Tiara wins Gr.3 Supreme Stakes

29 Aug 2016

Opal Tiara (Thousand Words ex Zarafa) proved herself to be another hard-working member of Mick Channon’s stable when landing the Gr.3 Supreme Stakes at Goodwood on Sunday. She had shown she was capable of winning a race of this nature when third in the G2 May Hill S. over a mile at Doncaster in September and when registering an impressive first black-type success in the Listed Eternal S. over 7 furlongs at Carlisle June 22. The bay produced her best effort yet to defy a big weight and take a competitive handicap at York also at that distance last time Aug. 18 and upped her game once again here. Moved up to second after the initial exchanges, she held as Jallota took over before the furlong pole but was spurred on by the competition on either side as Convey loomed and gradually gained the upper hand from 100 yards out. “She’s a tough filly, she always has been,” Channon commented. “She’s been in great form all year, I just thought the fillies allowance might make a difference and the way it’s worked out it probably has. She’s thrived and needs top-of-the-ground, so we couldn’t wait for Doncaster in case the ground went. I would hope we could keep her in training. I suppose Dubai or Qatar would be option, where the ground would be fast. I’d like to think we could have a campaign there, but I need to speak to everyone. Seven or a mile is no problem.” Opal Tiara is so far the only foal out of an unraced descendant of the Queen Mary S. third Quest (The Minstrel), whose best progeny is the G1 Santa Barbara H. heroine Bequest (Sharpen Up). Also featuring in this pedigree is the G1 Grand Criterium winner Treizieme (The Minstrel) and sires Oakmount, Eastern Mystic and Junius.
