Import becomes second Group 1 winner for his sire, Clodovil.

Moriarty (Clodovil) landed the final Group 1 of the Australian calander year to give Chris Waller, Sydney’s premier trainer, his tenth top-flight victory of the current season when winning the Kingston Town Classic (G1, 1800m) at Ascot yesterday.

Having finished an eye-catching third behind the re-opposing Elite Helle) in the Railway Stakes (G1, 1600m), Moriarty had been subject of sustained market support in the build-up to the $500,000 feature.  Such confidence showed no signs of relenting on Thursday when it was announced that Douglas Whyte, former Hong Kong Champion Jockey, had been booked to ride.

Moriarty enjoyed a good trip from the inside barrier, sitting just off the leaders before being angled out for a run approaching the home turn. He stayed on strongly to wear down Disposition in the final strides and Whyte added: “I had a great run around and followed the right horse. The gate was a huge advantage because I was able to offset a lot of the weight.”

Moriarty (Clodovil – Justice System by Criminal Type) was purchased by Waller for 90,000gns from Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in 2011 having previously been trained by Richard Hannon snr. In becoming the second Group 1 winner for Clodovil, Moriarty followed up the success of the Mark Johnson-trained Nahoodh (Clodovil), who won the Falmouth Stakes (G1, 1m). Out of the unplaced Justice System (Criminal Type), who is a half-sister to the Royal Ascot G2 winner Lear Spear (Lear Fan). His second dam, Golden Gorse (His Majesty), won five times and she is a half sister to G3 winner Lotus Pool and Inny River, herself the dam of G2 winner Montgomery’s Arch and Listed winner Welcome Inn.
