Kickboxer proves his namesake again in Haydock victory

07 Sep 2013

Sometimes horses are aptly named and Theresa Burns’ KICKBOXER certainly is.

At Haydock this afternoon, the ultra competitive son of Clodovil showed that he's a force to be reckoned with by winning a long time duel with HM The Queen's Musical Comedy in the Class 2 Betfred "Treble Odds On Lucky 15's" Nursery Handicap.

Paul Hanagan was at his very best to coax KICKBOXER through the initial part of the six furlong contest before asking him to get competitive a furlong and a half from home.

From what KICKBOXER has shown us, both at home and on the racecourse, relishing a scrap comes naturally and that's exactly what he did.

Trainer Mick Channon was delighted for everyone concerned.

"It's not the dog in the fight - it's the fight in the dog and Theresa's horse has been a scrapper all season. He took a while to come to hand but since he had a run up at Windsor, which he needed badly, he's turned himself inside out.

"He's won his maiden, been full of zest when placed in nurseries and stepped up yet again today.

"Paul said he'd have kept going forever once the scrap was on and although it was a valuable prize, we can both put away our Knighthood ambitions having beaten The Queen's horse in such a tight finish.

"He received weight from the runner up and will now suffer the consequences but don't write this lad off. He's got everything you'd want in a friend - he's hard-working, loyal and genuine. A credit to himself and his owner/breeders."
