Veteran Rathasker sire Mujadil's Kingsgate Native strikes again in Gr.2 Temple

“Native back to put young brigade in the shade!”

Kingsgate Native (Mujadil) got his head in front in fine style yesterday winning the Gr.2 Temple Stakes at Haydock, the race in which he landed his last victory whilst in the care of Sir Michael Stoute, but this time for trainer Robert Cowell.

Entering the final furlong Kingsgate Native powered to the fore in the centre and ran on to win by a neck from Swiss Spirit (Invincible Spirit), with three-year-old Reckless Abandon (Exchange Rate) best of the pack on the farside, beaten a head in third. “It is really satisfying to see an eight-year-old win a race like this,” said Cowell.

A dual Gr.1 winner when trained by John Best, Kingsgate Native joined Cowell last summer and was just touched off in the Gr.3 World Trophy on his second start for the Newmarket handler. His next target is likely to be the Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Kingsgate Native showed he was something out of the ordinary when he won the Nunthorpe Stakes as a Maiden at the age of two in 2007. Kingsgate notched up successes in the 2007 G1 Nunthorpe S. and following year’s G1 Golden Jubilee S.

Cowell says “He’s like a spring chicken. He wakes up, he bucks and kicks and squeals, and is a real happy camper. He is a very talented horse. He’s been training like a bloody good horse.”

Bred by Peter McCutcheon, Kingsgate Native is out of the winning Indian Ridge mare Native Force and is from the family of the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas winner Las Meninas (Glenstal) and the Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes winner Sheer Viking (Danehill).
