At Royal Randwick, imported Irish-bred 6YO gelding Moriarty (Clodovil-Justice System, by Criminal Type) scored by 1-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $200,000 Gr2 Hill Stakes (2000m) for 3YOs+, over fellow imported 6YO gelding Glencadam Gold (Refuse to Bend-Sandrella, by Darshaan) & imported 6YO entire Masked Marvel (Montjeu-Waldmark, by Mark of Esteem). Moriarty took his record to 10 wins (including the Gr2 Brisbane Cup, Listed Mayor's Cup, Listed Gosford Cup & Listed Tattersall's Club Cup) & 9 placings (including the Gr3 Gallinule Stakes at The Curragh & Listed Frank Underwood Cup) from 32 starts for $766,922 earnings.

Moriarty is bound for the Metropolitan (Gr.1, 2400m) bound after his tough victory. Describing the Metropolitan as “our Caulfield Cup and the right race for him,” trainer Chris Waller said that his win would “top him off nicely. He is a real 2000-2400m sort of horse with a great sprint. He is a real professional and he keeps taking the next step.” Jockey Nash Rawiller, who rode Moriarty in patient fashion, said that letting the gelding find his feet is the best way to handle him ; “you have to ride him a bit like that, there are not too many staying horses who have a turn of foot like he does.”

Bred on a 4 X 3 cross of His Majesty (Ribot), the cleverly named Moriarty is out of the Criminal Type (Alydar) mare Justice System, half sister to the triple Group winning UK galloper Lear Spear (Lear Fan).
